- This show had a deist perspective: God-like beings are fine, but if they start interacting with humans they become subject to human frailties. You pointed this out. You rightly poked fun at the very tame sexual tension the show tries to create.
When I saw this show as a child, I was sort of caught up at bad it would be to have a mad person with super powers in charge of the ship. Now I wonder what would he have done with it? Would he have tried to organize a takeover of the UFP or would have just gone from place to place terrorizing random victims for a thrill? I suppose the answer depends on the extent of his super powers. Could he hold off the entire galaxy? Or would he eventually have to establish a dictator’s power structure to keep them from coming after him and defeating him?
I think you were serious about praising the most parodied Shatner speech in Star Trek history. I never thought of it that way, but if I were in the actual situation, if I really thought I was about to be a apart of a leap forward for humanity as important as the discovery of agriculture, I would have to weigh that against incredible risk. This must have struck a chord with audiences 20 years into the atomic age.
I haven’t seen this episode in a while, but after hearing you watch it I think it’s a good one IF you can suspend disbelief, ignore the Shatnerism, and try to buy into the premise of the show.
