- I’m glad you brought up how the Vulcan ship being destroyed seemed so different from the recent movie. The survivors of the Vulcan holocaust in that movie must have experienced a headache much worse than Spock’s in this episode.
Regarding the criticism of Earth history, I think Spock was just being an ass. He’s saying they’ve solved the problems of violence while Earth hasn’t eliminated violence completely. Later he says McCoy is sad about not being selected for the mission b/c McCoy wants his credentials to make up for his lack of ability. Spock is a bit of a jerk in this episode.
You rightly poked fun at Kirk having to decide which friend to send on the shuttle mission. Kirk’s difficulty with this decision never rang true for me. The whole ship was supposed to be in danger, so it’s hard for me to feel suspense about the entire crew being in danger with one crewmember in MORE danger.
You have a very good point about the luck wishing question. My first reaction is I would want to hear well-wishes, but OTOH it might make me more nervous about the mission. I have heard that people in the hospital do worse if they are told people are praying for them possibly because the thought of needing prayers, luck, etc makes you feel worse.
I never noticed the talk about reproductive activity commencing just after they penetrated it. That’s funny.
That anti-power discussion was funny to. Kirk explains to the bridge crew what he’s doing AFTER he took the ship into the zone and might not be able to get out. When he says “We are committed,” Scotty seems to think, “I hope you didn’t move the ship here on a whim and then start questioning your decision.”
I enjoyed this podcast.
